Marie-Louise von Franz' essay The Inferior Function is unique for clearly and practically outlining the analytical uses of Jung's typology. Here she emphasizes and demonstrates how it is the inferior function, the awkward, least adapted part in an individual, which paradoxically, standing closest to the unconscious, is the most creatively charged, and holds the key to the whole individuation process. As usual, von Franz' mixture of Jungian expertise and down-to-earth profundity is a strong antidote to the temptation to use Jung's typology as a pseudo-intellectual framework.
